The name “Essa” is of great antiquity and is linked, by Henderson the
Cornish historian, with Ptolemy’s “Uxella”. The manor of Essa enters
documented history in The Domesday Book and deeds still exist from a sale in
1294. Essa is within half a mile of the coastal path (which leads to the
coves at Lantic Bay and the superb coastal viewpoint at Pencarrow Head) and
Lanteglos Church where Daphne du Maurier was married. The whole area
has been protected by the National Trust for many years and is beautiful and
unspoilt.
Essa Barn is not individually documented but is certainly very old. It is situated near to the main house and has been carefully converted into a charming home with a skilful blend of the character of centuries and fine traditional craftsmanship.
