Lostwithiel |
|
Lostwithiel, the ancient capital of Cornwall, stands on the banks of the beautiful River Fowey about seven miles from the sea. It received its first Charter as a borough eight hundred years ago and has many charming historic buildings and numerous small shops, inns and restaurants. The 13th Century bridge which was the focus of the old town, still provides the lowest crossing on the River Fowey and marks its tidal boundary. At high tide, the river is suitable for small boats and is popular with anglers for its flounder, bass, salmon and trout.
Around Lostwithiel, there are many interesting places to visit. Restormel Castle, the one time seat of Richard Earl of Cornwall is within a pleasant walk of the town. Several riverside footpaths lead from the town and local guide books are available. The coves and beaches on the south coast and the ancient port of Fowey are within fifteen minutes drive and the historic harbours of Charlestown and Mevagissey are about 30 minutes away.
Lostwithiel is an ideal centre for a holiday exploring Cornwall and all parts are readily accessible by road. It is also suitable for visitors who wish to travel by train or coach. Some main line Penzance trains stop at the local station and National Express operate a service to the town. There are local services which can then be used to explore the surrounding area. |
